FTP Surfer:

Requirements

  • You will need the following information.
  • The server's Internet address:
  • Your login ID (user name) ex: (joeuser@mydomainname.com)
  • Your password

FTP Surfer is a File Transfer Protocol program available free. It is used to transfer files from your computer to the directory on the class server.


Installing FTP Surfer

  1. Follow this link to download FTP Surfer.
  2. Select "save this file to disk" option when download window opens.
  3. Save this file to your desktop.
  4. The download will begin. You may need to click "Close" when the download is complete.
  5. To install the program, double-click its icon on the desktop of your computer.
  6. Go through the installation process.

 
Configuring FTP Surfer

  • Start the program by going to the Start > Programs > FTP Surfer on the bottom left-hand corner of your computer screen.
  • A dialog box will open asking to setup server profile.
  • Type the following information into the fields provided:

Create a New FTP Site Profile

  1. The File menu, point to New and click on Site Profile.
  2. The Profiles dialog box will appear. In the Name box, type in a descriptive name for your site.
  3. In the Address box, type in your FTP server name,. It is in the form of "yourhostname.yourdomain.com."
  4. In the User name and Password boxes, enter your user name and password. click OK to connect.




Follow the steps below to upload files to the web.


Uploading files using FTP Surfer


1. Start the FTP Surfer. It should automatically connect to the server you just configured.



2. To upload files to the server, simply drag and drop all files you wish to upload from a location on your computer to the FTP Surfer window on the right. Another way of uploading files would be to click the upload button  at the top menu bar and browse for the files on your computer you wish to upload.

3. To download* files from the server to your computer, select all files you wish to download from the window on the right and click the download button at the top menu bar.-


4. Select the location on your computer where you wish to save the files and they will be downloaded to that location


How do I view the web pages I've uploaded?


Note: Your homepage must be named "index.htm" or "index.html"

1. Start your web browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox...).
2. In the URL box enter a web address using this format:
http://www.domain.com
